Dr B's BARF

The majority of our Doctor B’s BARF products have been formulated to meet the nutritional requirements of all life stages for both dogs and cats.

The only exception is our Dog BARF Lite variety, which is formulated to have less fat and calories to support weight loss or other health conditions. 

This variety is suitable for adult animals, including older animals, but not for puppies, pregnant or lactating animals.  

Our BARF products supply the correct balance of carefully selected raw whole foods to deliver their promise of promoting pet health and they fulfil all the nutritional needs of dogs and cats.

They meet the AAFCO requirements for being complete and balanced and more importantly, they also meet the biological requirements for completeness and balance.   

Preparation:  

Doctor B’s BARF patties are individually sealed in easy-open pouches to make meal times easy. They should be kept frozen until about 12-24 hours before the animal is going to eat it.

To thaw, simply remove the patty from its plastic container, place in a (preferably) ceramic container with a lid and defrost in the refrigerator, on the bottom shelf. 

Don’t allow it to drip onto any other food, so ensure the container is sealed and upright.  The maximum refrigeration time (in a closed container) prior to serving is 36 hours. Patties should not be frozen again once thawed.   

Once thawed, feed to your pet and allow them up to 30 minutes to eat, then any uneaten food should be discarded.

When preparing raw BARF patties, take the usual precautions that you would when handling raw meat for the rest of your family, by using a clean knife, cleaning the counter or any other surfaces or utensils it has come into contact with, and washing your hands with hot soapy water and drying thoroughly immediately after contact.   

Storage:  

Doctor B’s BARF needs to be stored frozen -18°C  

Freezing is the most cost effective way of preserving raw whole food without compromising on quality and without the addition of preservatives.

Freezing will kill protozoa (such as Toxoplasma) and multicellular parasites (such as the hydatid tapeworm), and will arrest the growth of many bacteria to increase the safety of the product.   

Freezing is also appropriate – at least for dogs, from an evolutionary viewpoint. We know that the dog is a descendant of the wolf and research carried out by the Canadian Mounties during the 1950’s confirmed that wolves in the depths of winter depended upon frozen prey for their survival.   

We also know that many dogs prefer their patties in the frozen state, particularly during summer, when they are hot and would like a cold treat to cool them off.   

The majority of the time, we recommend a Rapid Switch is Simplest and Best.  

No skill required. You simply stop feeding the old way and begin feeding Doctor B’s BARF!  

The only potential issues are transient tummy upsets (dogs and cats) and acceptance problems, particularly with cats. Gently warming the food (while still in the pouch) in some lukewarm water can help acceptance in cats particularly.  

An instruction on how to do a slow switch to BARF: 

This method involves gradually feeding less of the old food and more of Doctor B’s BARF over a period of one to two weeks. 

Day 1-2: Fast your pet for at least 12 hours post their last non BARF meal. Feed 90% of the old food diet and 10% of the raw diet. 

Day 3-12: Gradually increase the raw diet each day by 10% and decrease the old diet by 10% each day for the next 9 days. Your morning meals will get less and less each day. 

Day 13: On the 13th day, you should be feeding ONLY the BARF Diet.

Dogs being fed our Doctor B’s BARF usually have smaller, firmer faeces that are passed less frequently as the BARF products are nutrient dense and the ingredients are more bioavailable.

This means our BARF is more easily absorbed into and utilised by the body, which means that there is less ‘waste’ food which needs to be eliminated as faecal matter. 

We would not generally recommend cooking our Doctor B's BARF products, as high heat will destroy many of the nutrients in the product, and as a result the product may not provide your pet with all the essential vitamins and minerals they need in their diet.
